I chose the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Its architectural style is early Islamic. The interior of Al-Aqsa Mosque is characteristic for the great early mosques. The roof is supported by columns with arches – in total 45 columns. The decoration of mosque is rich but not sumptuous – part of it is whitewashed, but some part of walls and the dome are adorned with mosaics and paintings, there are 121 stained glass windows. It opened in 705 AD, so it is about 1,313 years old. Its capacity is 5,000. It is used by worshipers to perform wudu, a ritual washing of the hands, arms, legs, feet, and face before entry into the mosque. For Muslims, the Noble Sanctuary hosts Islam's third holiest site, the al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Dome of the Rock, a seventh-century structure believed to be where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. Jews believe the compound is where the Biblical Jewish temples once stood, but Jewish law and the Israeli Rabbinate forbid Jews from entering the compound and praying there, as it is considered too holy to tread upon. The compound's Western Wall, known as the Wailing Wall to Jews, is believed to be the last remnant of the Second Temple, while Muslims refer to it as al-Buraq Wall and believe it is where the Prophet Muhammad tied al-Buraq, the animal upon which he ascended to the sky and spoke to God. The golden Dome of the Rock is a shrine built over the foundation stone in 691 CE. The Crusaders captured Jerusalem and the Temple Mount in 1099 and converted the Al Aqsa Mosque into a palace and the Dome of the Rock into a church. Saladin captured Jerusalem in 1187 and restored the mosque. Al Masjid Al Aqsa was the first qibla in Islam and it has been a significant and important place of worship for the Prophets of Islam. The Western Wall, the prayer site for Jews over the centuries, was part of the retaining walls.
